GAS INSTALLATIONS IN RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS

AVAILABLE UNTIL 23:59

ON 31 OCTOBER 2021

via

GO-TO-WEBINAR

ALLOW ± 5 HOURS TO COMPLETE

(CAN BE DONE IN SECTIONS AT YOUR LEISURE)

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding principles of gas installations in residential buildings. (Professional Competency: Architectural Design; Building Services and Related Technologies).

The rapidly increasing cost of electricity has resulted in a growth in popularity among many South Africans to utilise gas installations in their buildings. Professionals are tasked to design buildings utilising this alternative source of energy.

According to regulations that were introduced in 2009, all gas installations must have a Certificate of Conformity according to the Pressure Equipment Regulations that have been promulgated under the Occupation Health and Safety Act (No 85 of 1993).

However, many are unaware that there are specific regulations that gas equipment and installations in buildings have to comply with.
.
This workshop will explore and interpret the different regulations and standards that both professionals and building owners need to comply with, and specifically SANS10087-1 for general installation requirements and SANS10252-1 for hot water generation.

HEALTH AND SAFETY REGULATIONS IN CONSTRUCTION AND HOW IT AFFECTS ARCHITECTURAL PROFESSIONALS

AVAILABLE UNTIL 23:59

ON 31 OCTOBER 2021

via

GO-TO-WEBINAR

ALLOW ± 5 HOURS TO COMPLETE

(CAN BE DONE IN SECTIONS AT YOUR LEISURE)

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding principles of construction health and safety legislation, with a focus on the requirements of The Construction Regulations 2014 as published in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act  (Professional Competency: Office Practice, Legal Aspects, and Ethics).

Construction Health and Safety (H&S) has long been the focus of attention of many industry stakeholders and role players in South Africa, and while it is acknowledged that many industry associations and professional societies, contracting organisations, and others have made significant efforts to improve H&S within the construction industry, overall construction H&S is not improving commensurately.

Notably, construction continues to contribute a disproportionate number of fatalities and injuries relative to other industrial sectors, and there continue to be high levels of non-compliance with H&S legislation generally, and specifically the construction and other H&S Regulations in South Africa. Improving Health and Safety in the construction industry, therefore, continues to remain a priority.

This workshop will expose the architectural professional to the Construction Regulations 2014 - with emphasis on the roles and duties of the designer (architectural professional) and the owner.

WATER RETICULATION

AND USAGE IN

RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS

AVAILABLE UNTIL 23:59

ON 31 OCTOBER 2021

via

GO-TO-WEBINAR

ALLOW ± 5 HOURS TO COMPLETE

(CAN BE DONE IN SECTIONS AT YOUR LEISURE)

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding principles of water reticulation systems and usage in residential buildings (Professional Competency: Architectural Design; Environmental Relationships; Building Services and related Technologies).

Water is the cornerstone of civilisation. From the great cisterns of the Indus Valley civilisation to the London ringmain, the supply of water is an essential part of human existence.

Likewise, the wise use of water is at the centre of the world’s religions and has cultural significance worldwide. But for the past couple of centuries, humans have started to take water management for granted. We have considered ourselves to be masters of the environment, able to turn the direction of rivers and to build cities in the desert. This arrogance has led to failures that have demonstrated that we must live within our natural means.

The real answer to our future water needs lies not in grandiose schemes but in sustainable consumption in our homes and offices. We need to look at the clever use of technology and social science to maximise and optimise the use of existing supplies of water.

As designers of buildings, we have to understand the basics of water reticulation and usage in buildings. We have the codes (SANS10252-1 and SANS3088) that we have to comply with but do we really understand the principles behind it?

Knowing the  SANS Codes will let us satisfy regulatory requirements. In this workshop, we are going beyond the regulatory requirements by exploring the reasons behind these requirements based on other international codes, publications etc.

THE LANGUAGE

OF SPACE

AVAILABLE UNTIL 23:59

ON 31 OCTOBER 2021

via

GO-TO-WEBINAR

ALLOW ± 5 HOURS TO COMPLETE

(CAN BE DONE IN SECTIONS AT YOUR LEISURE)

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding principles of architectural design (Professional Competency: Architectural Design).

Not all behaviour in space involves conversation, but much of our behaviour in space involves communication in some way or other. If
the truth was told, throughout our lives, we probably communicate far more through space than we do with formal language.

When we walk into a room, others are reading this spatial language long before we speak. What we wear, how we smell, the manner of our walk, our facial expression, where we choose to sit, the way other people look at us and acknowledge us.

We use the language of space, then, for many purposes. Through it
we can express both our individuality and our solidarity with others. We can indicate our values and lifestyles, allegiances and dislikes. We can use it to help generate feelings of excitement or calm. We can communicate our willingness or otherwise to be approached, interrupted, greeted and engaged in social intercourse. We can control the proximity of others. We can demonstrate our dominance or submission and our status in society. We can use it to bring people together or keep them apart. We can use it to convey complex collections of rules of acceptable behaviour. We can also use it on occasion to signal our intention to break those rules!

This workshop will explore

  • Space as language

  • Space and the human dimension

  • Mechanisms of perceiving space

  • Ways of perceiving space

  • Space and distance

  • Proxemics

  • The territory

  • Space and time

  • Recording space

ISLAMIC

ART AND

ARCHITECTURE

AVAILABLE UNTIL 23:59

ON 30 NOVEMBER 2021

via

GO-TO-WEBINAR

ALLOW ± 5 HOURS TO COMPLETE

(CAN BE DONE IN SECTIONS AT YOUR LEISURE)

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding principles of architectural history and theory regarding Islamic architecture (Professional Competency: Architectural Design, Architectural History, Theory, and Precedent).

Any attempt to make sense of Islamic art and architecture as a whole while retaining a chronological framework runs the risk of distortion.

Bias of several different kinds is hard to avoid. It is simply not possible to be equally well informed and equally interested in all aspects of the subject. The need to consider in some detail the early
centuries of Islamic art is made imperative by the major impact which works of this period had on later art.

But a great deal of this early art has perished, and to do justice to what survives in the context of its own time and of subsequent periods demands a closer and more detailed focus than is appropriate for the more numerous examples of later art. Some degree of over-balance is therefore inevitable.

Certain art forms such as calligraphy or textiles continued to be produced in most parts of the Islamic world from early times, but they are not of equal significance in each area or period. Thus the absence of a discussion of, say, Tulunid woodwork, Maghribi pottery, Timurid textiles, Spanish metalwork, or Ottoman Qur'ans should not be interpreted as a signal that they did not exist, have not survived, or are of peripheral interest. It is simply that it seemed best to reserve a discussion of certain media for those periods m which production was of the most significant scale and quality Similarly, the art of entire dynasties - Ghaznavid, Turcoman, the beyliks of Anatolia, the muluk al-tawa'if of medieval Spain - is virtually ignored.

Such omissions are dictated by the rigorous word limit and the need to see the wood rather than the trees. In other words, the option of trying to say something, however little, about almost everything, and thus writing a rather bland and trivial text, was rejected. It seemed preferable to single out key objects and monuments for relatively detailed scrutiny, in the hope that they would provide a means of entry into the school or style that produced them.

Included in this workshop:

  • The Birth of Islamic Art: the Umayyads

  • The Abbasids

  • The Fatimids

  • The Seljuqs

  • The Age of the Atabegs: Syria, Iraq, and Anatolia ca 100-1300

  • The Mamluks

  • The Muslim West

  • The Ilkhanids and Timurids

  • The Safavids

  • The Ottomans

ARCHITECTURAL STYLES - VICTORIAN

AVAILABLE UNTIL 23:59

ON 30 NOVEMBER 2021

(CAN BE DONE IN SECTIONS AT YOUR LEISURE)

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding principles of architectural history (Professional Competency: Architectural History, Theory and Precedent).

Why are we interested in Victorian architecture?

Being so unlike any other architecture that there ever was, it is fascinating in itself. It is far enough from us to belong to a world utterly unlike our own. It is near enough to us to be all around us every day, and also to be, as it were, the womb from which we have come.

Why did Victorian architecture exist at all? A difficult question to answer. A virile nation, with a rising population, had to build somehow and somewhere, but why in that particular form - alternately so beautiful and so grotesque? The answer is complex.

This workshop will attempt to give the attendee at least a tentative answer.

MESOAMERICAN

ARCHITECTURE

AVAILABLE UNTIL 23:59

ON 30 NOVEMBER 2021

via

GO-TO-WEBINAR

ALLOW ± 5 HOURS TO COMPLETE

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding principles of architectural history (Professional Competency: Architectural Design, Architectural History, Theory, and Precedent).

Mesoamerican architecture is the set of architectural traditions produced by pre-Columbian cultures and civilizations of Mesoamerica, traditions which are best known in the form of public, ceremonial and urban monumental buildings and structures. The distinctive features of Mesoamerican architecture encompass a number of different regional and historical styles, which however are significantly interrelated.

These styles developed throughout the different phases of Mesoamerican history as a result of the intensive cultural exchange between the different cultures of the Mesoamerican culture area through thousands of years. Mesoamerican architecture is mostly noted for its pyramids, which are the largest such structures outside of Ancient Egypt.

One interesting and widely researched topic is the relation between cosmovision, religion, geography, and architecture in Mesoamerica. Much seems to suggest that many traits of Mesoamerican architecture were governed by religious and mythological ideas. For example, the layout of most Mesoamerican cities seem to be influenced by the cardinal directions and their mythological and symbolic meanings in Mesoamerican culture.

Another part of Mesoamerican architecture is its iconography. The monumental architecture of Mesoamerica was decorated with images of religious and cultural significance, and also in many cases with writing in some of the Mesoamerican writing systems. Iconographic decorations and texts on buildings are important contributors to the overall current knowledge of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican society, history and religion.

This workshop will provide information about the architecture of the Inca, Maya and Aztec.

Sick building syndrome is a term used to describe situations in which building occupants experience discomfort and even acute health problems that appear to be related to time spent in the building.           -  Mohamed Bouberki (2008)

BUILDINGS MATTER. We spend more and more of our lives inside them, and poorly designed, built, and maintained buildings are a common cause of human suffering, illness, and death. People are too often hot in summer, cold in winter, and face real danger if the power goes off. Many more suffer at work or at home from poor air quality. Sealed buildings, flawed building materials, and poor design lead to leaks and mold unless installation and maintenance are perfect—and they rarely are.
