THE ARCHITECTURE

OF

LE COBUSIER

Available from 08:00 on 27 June 2022

until 23:59 on 10 July 2022

Duration = ±7.5 hours

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding the principles and practice of architectural history.

Le Corbusier’s architecture was built around a philosophy of Orphism, based on the ancient mystery religion of that name.  Orpheus – linked to the figures of Dionysus and Apollo – is himself of course known for having charmed the gods with the beauty of his music.

Put very crudely, Orphism was the belief, derived from the ideas of Pythagoras and Plato that the cosmos was held together by numbers and that geometry and proportion could be used to achieve harmony with nature – a process assisted by a balance of masculine and feminine.

His fascinations with ancient Greek philosophy, the kabbala, versions of Gnosticism, Catharism, troubadours, masonry, alchemy, Neo-Platonism, Rabelais, Cervantes, Apollinaire and the Platonic androgyne are all, in essence, Orphic – his architecture providing a route of initiation into this belief in
this Bacchic figure.

In this workshop, the following aspects o Le Corbusier's architecture will be discussed:

  • Standardization and Unity

  • Somatic details

  • Light and Dark

  • Framing

  • Elements of the architectural promenade

  • Rituals

  • Clouds

UNIVERSAL DESIGN:

MAKING BUILDINGS ACCESSIBLE TO ALL IN SOCIETY

SOLUTIONS FOR A BARRIER-FREE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Available from 08:00 on 04 July 2022

until 23:59 on 17 July 2022

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding the principles and practice of universal design.

Designing for the disabled is about making buildings accessible to and usable by people with disabilities. Universal design is about making buildings safe and convenient for all their users, including people with disabilities.

The theme of this webinar series is the similarities and differences between the two, between their correspondences and affinities on the one hand, and their discordancies and diverse methodologies on the other.

Based on Universal Design by Selwyn Goldsmith, Universal Design by Oliver Herwig, South African National Standards and legislation, and international standards, this workshop will go beyond the minimum requirements for design and will explore the five hypotheses of Oliver Herwig:

• Tomorrow’s society will be older, more varied, and more difficult to narrow down to a consensus.
• The future will not be won with more equipment and more intelligent features, but with products that make life easier.
•  There will be a fundamental shift in perspectives. We will not develop a more aerodynamic Rollator, but rather build houses and spaces that are accessible for all.
•  The balance shifts the moment the new seniors stop standing in line at the pharmacy holding a prescription and begin working as salespeople in department stores. Demand creates new products, and choice creates the market.
• Studying seniors leads to better designs

THE ARCHITECTURE OF

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT

Available from 08:00 on 04 July 2022

until 23:59 on 17 July 2022

Duration = ±7.5 hours

ABOUT THE  WORKSHOP

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding architectural history.

Frank Lloyd Wright 1s regarded as one of the greatest architects of the 20th century. With a life span that extended nearly I00 years, he was certainly one of the most long-lived.

Over his lifetime he witnessed an age of great change as the world moved into the machine age and a period in which a new architecture would emerge.

Few architects would display greater creativity nor contribute more to this development than Wright.  His legacy to the field of architecture in general, and American architecture in particular, comes in many forms - his innovat1ve use of materials; his rejection of rooms as defined boxes of walled-in space, and his great commissions such as the Price Tower or Guggenheim Museum.

Wright was one of the first American architects to provide an alternative to the ideas prevailing at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries - those of Art Nouveau, and styles such as Queen Anne or Tudor.

FUNDAMENTALS OF BAUHAUS DESIGN, PAINTING, SCULPTURE, AND ARCHITECTURE

Available from 08:00 on 11 July 2022

until 23:59 on 24 July 2022

ABOUT THE  WORKSHOP

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding architectural theory and history.

In its experimental state, the Bauhaus School could serve only a small group of students. The great majority of those interested had to rely on accidental information: it was mainly for them that the fourteen old Bauhaus Books were published.

The importance of these publications became greater in 1933 when the Bauhaus was closed by the National Socialist Government; these books then remained the only authentic records of fourteen years of educational work.

Everything man does throw light on his position of the moment. This position is determined by biological nature and participation in a certain culture. His expression will be fruitful when it carries with it an objective meaning for all people. This depends upon his contribution to cultural development. This is quite apart from his personal satisfaction which is based upon the adequate expression of his biological character.

This workshop gets its name and is based on the book by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and will explore the new vision of architectural training in the USA a few decades ago based on the teachings of the Bauhaus School.

INDIAN ARCHITECTURAL THEORY

Available from 08:00 on 18 July 2022

until 23:59 on 31 July 2022

ABOUT THE  WORKSHOP

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding architectural theory.

Vastu Vidya is an Indic theory of architecture. The Sanskrit term describes a body of knowledge, sustained, developed, and modified by successive generations of architects over the course of many centuries.

The term is not the name of only one book or text; it implies a tradition of knowledge that has at various times been ordered and expressed ( and so is handed down to us) in a range of texts, with a variety of titles.

Some of these texts have formed a focus of study - by linguists interested in investigating their literary content, by art historians hoping to find the keys with which to unlock some of the problems of interpreting the great monuments of India's past, and (more lately) by architects and others in search of assistance in meeting the challenges of the present and the future.

This workshop, based on the book by Vibhuti Chakrabarti makes important interventions in a number of continuing debates around these texts and their uses, and it draws attention to the relation between these so far somewhat disparate debates in ways that are illuminating to - and certainly ought not to be ignored by - anyone who is interested in Indian thought or design.
