SAIAT WORKSHOPS vs ESKOM'S LOAD SHEDDING

"Eskom’s national control manager, Gavin Hurford, said they previously projected that there would be 61 days of possible load shedding during winter, due to the parastatal’s ongoing maintenance programme. But Hurford said the scenario had changed over time and they were now predicting at least 100 days of rolling power cuts this winter" - The Citizen

SAIAT is implementing a change in the way we run online workshops from Monday 09 May 2022 to ensure that delegates will be able to still enjoy the workshop for which they have registered without the fear of losing half of it due to load shedding.

Instead of presenting the workshops live as in the past, all workshops will be pre-recorded and available from 00:00 on the day as advertised for a period of three (3) days with full control to the participant to stop and to re-start the recording and continue from where it was stopped. The same rules regarding attentiveness and polls will still be applicable and attendees will still be able to ask questions in the form of written questions - these will be answered via e-mail as soon as possible.

If you have already received a link for a workshop, please note that you will receive a cancellation note followed by a new link. We trust that this arrangement will omit any frustration caused by load shedding.

Please phone 073 184 3893 if you have any queries.

BUILDING WITH

STRAW BALES

Available from 08:00 on 27 May 2022

until 23:59 on 01 June  2022

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding alternative construction methodes.

Although straw has been used for building for millennia—usually combined with other materials such as clay and sand—it seems that it was not until the baling machine was invented in the late 1800s that builders recognised the potential to use blocks of straw as a building material.

A smattering of straw bale buildings was constructed up to about the 1980s, but the 1980s/1990s marks a substantial revival in straw bale building in many parts of the world, including North America, Europe, and Australia. Now, examples of straw bale buildings include simple domestic dwellings of rather rustic nature, very modern homes, creatively sculptured structures, and commercial buildings, such as wineries. They can be found in both urban and rural environments and, more often than not, their design emphasises other environmentally friendly features such as solar passive heating and the use of other environmentally friendly materials.

until 23:59 on 03 June 2022

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding the requirements of construction law.

A building or engineering contract may be defined as a contract in terms of which one party, called the builder or contractor, agrees to perform building or engineering work for another.

A distinction is sometimes drawn between building and engineering contracts. This distinction depends upon the nature of the works to be constructed. Where the work is of the nature of a dwelling or commercial premises the contract is generally referred to as a building contract, the contractor is called a building contractor, and the planning is usually done by an architectural professional and the supervision by an architectural professional or principal agent.

Based on The Building Contract (E Finsen) and Law of Building and Engineering Contracts and Arbitration (P A Ramsden) this workshop will explore the legal aspects of managing a building contract as an agent of the owner.

MASONRY IN ARCHITECTURE

Available from 08:00 on 03 June 2022

until 23:59 on 07 June 2022

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding the requirements of masonry contruction.

Although masonry was popular during the late 20th century, in terms of respect and significance it had taken a back seat behind elegant designs of metal, stone panels, and glass. Today, we detect a need for a style of architecture that puts a personal imprint on a structure to contrast with the anonymously controlled production process. Masonry construction can achieve this.

The requirements of energy conservation, which play an ever-increasing role in building, can be realized in masonry in a way that is compatible with our modern lives. In its infinite number of possibilities, we see the spirit and charm of an ancient but never outdated trade.

The simplicity of the masonry material allows the observer to experience the design process, as it were, including him in the creation - watching and supervising. This compulsion to establish clarity leads to a vitality that fascinates us again and again on buildings of masonry.

What to expect in this workshop:

  • Masonry in architecture:

What is masonry?

Design

Masonry today and tomorrow

  • Fundamentals

Masonry units

Masonry bonds

Structural masonry

Masonry details

The building of masonry

Building science

  • Construction details

  • Built Examples in masonry

A GREEN VITRUVIUS

PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

Available from 08:00 on 08 June 2022

until 23:59 on 10 June 2022

ABOUT THE WEBINAR SERIES

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding the principles and practice of sustainable architectural design.

Owners, designers, regulators, and occupants all variously assess proposed and completed buildings with regard to comfort, functionality, cost, and aesthetics. In addition to these fundamental parameters, buildings are evaluated based on their environmental performance in areas such as energy consumption, air quality, daylighting, and recycled materials.

2000 years ago the roman architect Marcus Vitruvius Pollio wrote his The Ten Books on Architecture establishing the concept of the pattern book offering design principles and solutions that is still referred to in every architectural professional's education.

A Green Vitruvius by Vivienne Brophy and J Owen Lewis is intended as a green pattern book for today. This webinar series, based on this well-established textbook, provides advice on the integration of sustainable practice into the design and construction process, the issues to be considered, the strategies to be adopted, the elements of green design, and design evaluation within the process.

  • The Green Building / Process - Every experienced architectural professional is familiar with the different stages of their national design and construction process.

  • Issues - Defining the design parameters which need to be considered in green building design is not easy, particularly if this is to be of use to the architectural professional at the early, conceptual stages.

  • Strategies - Optimised performance and environmental quality of a building are best based on passive design principles and achieved through the development of form, envelope, and systems of the building.

  • Elements - Any list of types of components used in sustainable building could be very long. Hundreds of different solutions have emerged during the history of green architecture, but few are well tested over many years in different situations

  • Evaluation - The evaluation of the environmental and energy performance of buildings is a necessary component of the overall design process

UNIVERSAL DESIGN:

MAKING BUILDINGS ACCESSIBLE TO ALL IN SOCIETY

SOLUTIONS FOR A BARRIER-FREE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Available from 08:00 on 22 June 2022

until 23:59 on 24 June 2022

ABOUT THE WEBINAR SERIES

This virtual workshop will contribute to the continuing development of the architectural professional by providing further mobility and transportability within the field of applying and understanding the principles and practice of universal design.

Designing for the disabled is about making buildings accessible to and usable by people with disabilities. Universal design is about making buildings safe and convenient for all their users, including people with disabilities.

The theme of this webinar series is the similarities and differences between the two, between their correspondences and affinities on the one hand, and their discordancies and diverse methodologies on the other.

Based on Universal Design by Selwyn Goldsmith, Universal Design by Oliver Herwig, South African National Standards and legislation, and international standards, this webinar series goes beyond the minimum requirements for design and will explore the five hypotheses of Oliver Herwig:

• Tomorrow’s society will be older, more varied, and more difficult to narrow down to a consensus.
• The future will not be won with more equipment and more intelligent features, but with products that make life easier.
•  There will be a fundamental shift in perspectives. We will not develop a more aerodynamic Rollator, but rather build houses and spaces that are accessible for all.
•  The balance shifts the moment the new seniors stop standing in line at the pharmacy holding a prescription and begin working as salespeople in department stores. Demand creates new products, and choice creates the market.
• Studying seniors leads to better designs
